It is how you move through the system at the rate that makes sense.
Every system we operate – a body, a portfolio, a company, a market – is held together by constraints. That is the architecture under every single system.
There are three load-bearing constraints that are present in every structure. Alter the right one and a system can endure; remove the wrong one and a system drifts or collapses.
Here are the constraints I’ve found present in all systems:

The practice of accepting reality, resisting false certainty, and navigating uncertainty without illusion.
It is how you sense and feel where you are as you move through the system.

The productive role of deliberate limits, struggle, and resistance that foster adaptation and strength.
It is how you respond and adapt as needed as you move through the system.
All three need to be present for a system to stay coherent, and for the people operating within it to stay oriented. The operator is not separate from the system. They’re part of it – we all are. A system's coherence and an operator's orientation rise and fall together.
Based on this thinking, I’ve developed The Constraint Engine, an analytical tool that pressure-tests systems, scores their coherence, and helps identify which of its constraints are load-bearing. It is the operational spec for the research, workshops, and advisory work.
