I’m Steve Barth. I write about complexity and uncertainty, and about how people and the systems they run hold together when certainty is out of reach.
Complexity is what we face. Uncertainty is what we accept. Constraints are what we choose. Orientation is what we hold.
I spent thirty years in financial markets, most recently as a partner at an investment firm, making decisions where being wrong cost real money. I have raced long-course triathlon for forty years, including the Ironman World Championship in Kona in 2024. Somewhere in the training I noticed that the body I was building and the portfolio I was running sat on the same architecture. I left the industry to figure out what that meant. The figuring turned into a framework, an analytical engine, essays, and now a book.
Read more →By most measures the world has never worked better, and yet it has rarely felt harder to read. Part of that is complexity: everything we deal with is a system connected to other systems, with more moving pieces than any one person can track. Part of it is uncertainty: outcomes refuse to be predicted, no matter how much information we collect. Neither condition is going away, which makes orientation the discipline that matters: knowing where you are, and what is holding the system together, when you cannot know what comes next.
I search for what’s real beneath the stories, systems, incentives, and outputs we are handed. Systems have structure that can be read, and constrained systems thinking helps us grasp why they endure, drift, or fail. For a human-operated system to endure, from a body to a portfolio, three load-bearing constraints form a coherent common architecture. The operator is not separate from the system. We are part of it. The system’s coherence and the operator’s orientation rise and fall together.
